Ok, war flapsig formuliert: Es gibt mit Sicherheit ein paar Personen bei
Microsoft die genau wissen was es ist.

Ich aber habe auf die Schnelle nichts genaues dazu gefunden, abgesehen
von der Dateiformatspezifikation von MS. Eine etwas längere Suche hat
mich jetzt zu

im Literaturverzeichnis verweisen.

Langer Rede kurzer Sinn: HD-Photo verwendet neben einigen anderen Tricks
eine blockbasierte "Photo Core Transformation" und eine "Photo Overlap
Transformation" statt der sonst üblichen DCT. Was das genau ist hab ich
nicht rausbekommen und ich vermute, ohne die obigen Referenzen zu
besorgen (was ich nicht machen werde, so sehr interessiert mich das
Thema auch nicht) wird das auch nichts.

Der einzige Knackpunkt, den ich da sehe, ist der der Lizenz
und des M$-Geschäftsgebarens.

Technisch ist das Format gar nicht so uninteressant.

Das mag sein, aber aus Sicht des Betrachters würde ich ein
Wavelet-basiertes Verfahren mit großer Blockgröße immer einem
Fourier-basiertem Verfahren mit kleiner Blockgröße vorziehen. Einfach
weil die Artefakte beim Wavelet-Verfahren nicht so auffallen.

Aus Sicht des Urhebers möchte ich kein Format, daß nicht offen
spezifiziert ist.
