Das Kommando und das von ihm erzeugte Format. Ich dachte bislang, dass
es ein eigenes Format ist, habe aber nun aufgrund deiner Frage nochmal

Std 1003.1 (``POSIX.1''). Ich korrigiere mich also: pax sollte sich als
Schnittstelle durchsetzen und tar nach Posix als Austauschformat.

POSIX lies es bis vor Kurzem noch offen welches Archivformat per Default
verwendet werden soll, jetzt ist es das POSIX-1-2001 erweiterte TAR Format.

Das pax das mit POSIX.1-1992 und auch noch das was mit SUSv2 kam war definitiv
schlechter als damalige tar Implementierungen und konnte auch erhablich
weniger als z.B. ein star von 1992.

Ich finde pax immernoch eine wenig gelungene CLI Definition. Pax macht
das was niemand will, wie es nach Streits in Standadisierungsgremien
häufig der Falls ist, falls nicht jemand wie (z.B. Sun 2000 mit den
Extended Atrtibute Definitionen was wirklich Gutes neues während des
Streits entwickewlt). Pax ist das Ergebnis der "Tarwars" -> google ;-)

Auch wenn pax keiner will, ich unterstütze diese Kommandozeilenvariante
für Archiver seit 4 Jahren.

Auch heutiges pax kann vieles nicht das star seit 1986 kann....
Star bietet eine CLI die ein Superset desses ist was tar, pax und cpio
liefern und dem was star noch darüberhinaus kann. So ist es einfach
mit Hilfe von star eine univeselle "archiv-lib" zu bauen die alle
CLI varianten beherrscht. Auch ist deshalb aus veständlichen Gründen
das "star" CLI das bevorzugte.
