HTML bricht zusammenhängende Zeichenketten nicht um.

HTML bricht sowieso nicht um, sondern wenn dann der Browser. Ob der
überhaupt umbricht, und wenn ja, wo, hängt vom Browser ab. Opera z.B.
bricht an nicht-alphanumerischen Zeichen um, so dass beispielsweise
Filenamen oder URLs umbrochen werden. Firefox hingegen beachtet nicht
mal explizit vorhandene &shy;s.

Man vergleiche z.B. http://www.hjp.at/tests/silbentrennung.html in Opera
und Firefox.
