"The message for developers is clear: you should continue to provide
PowerPC versions of your applications, while preparing Intel versions of
the same applications.
To ease this transition while retaining and improving upon the
remarkable performance of Mac OS X, Apple has introduced universal
binaries, a format that places native code for both architectures in one
package. Universal binaries allow applications to run natively on both
PowerPC and Intel-based Macintoshes. Providing support for both
architectures in your application is essential, because the Mac OS X
platform will support both architectures for years to come."

"By intimidating the marketplace, imposing exclusive or near-exclusive
deals and offering illegal rebates, Intel's abusive monopolistic
behavior has barred AMD from effectively competing in markets around the
world.
Worldwide antitrust laws are clear: Abusive conduct to curb competition
by a dominant monopoly is improper. That's why we've filed a lawsuit
against Intel, to break free from its stranglehold on the PC industry
that has artificially restricted competition. Regulators around the
globe agree that the abuse of monopoly power to foreclose competition is
illegal, harmful to consumers and must be stopped. We believe our action
against Intel will unleash a new wave of innovation and provide greater
choice for consumers [...]"

il famoso pacchetto NeoOffice sfrutta proprio questa tecnologia, e
dunque non funziona sotto Rosetta.
"The problem just isn't Apple+Java, but also Apple+gcc. There's problems
with code that's in "C" and "C++". Prior to 2.0, OpenOffice.org is only
compatible with gcc version 3.3, a version which Apple is not supporting
for Mac on Intel. Although NeoOffice 1.2 is compatible on the Java
front, it's still not supported by Apple due to their decision to kill
support for gcc 3.3 based applications and only support gcc 4.0.
Even if gcc 3.3 was supported, OpenOffice.org for Mac OS X still does
contain some assembly code which is specific to the PowerPC processor.
While very small in comparison to the amount of C/C++/Java code, the
assembly code is critical and without it OpenOffice.org/Neo can't run."

Apple/IBM: un'occasione mancata.
"Cell is not limited to game systems. IBM and its partners have
announced a Cell-based systems and solutions leveraging the investment
into the high-performance Cell architecture. Other future uses include
HDTV sets, home servers, game servers, and supercomputers.
In addition to providing a scalable execution platform for a variety of
applications, Cell is also a scalable system architecture. As such, Cell
is not limited to a single chip, but is a scalable system. The number of
attached SPUs can be varied, to achieve different power/performance and
price/performance points.
The Cell architecture was conceived as a modular, extendible system
where multiple Cell subsystems each with an IBM 64-bit Power
ArchitectureTM core and attached SPUs, can form a symmetric
multiprocessor system.
The first Cell implementation can be used to build single-node system,
or dual-node systems with up to 2 Power ArchitectureTM cores and 16 SPUs
without glue logic. Larger systems can be integrated using a switch
architecture."

"TOKYO, JAPAN & ARMONK, NY - 12 Jan 2006: IBM, Sony Corporation and
Toshiba today announced they have begun a new, five-year phase of their
joint technology development alliance.
As part of this broad semiconductor research and development alliance,
the three companies will work together on fundamental research related
to advanced process technologies at 32 nanometers and beyond. The
agreement will help enable the three companies to more rapidly
investigate, identify and commercialize new technologies for consumer
and other applications.
Over the last five years Sony Corporation, Sony Computer Entertainment
Inc., Toshiba and IBM have collaborated on the "Cell" microprocessor
design, and its underlying SOI (silicon-on-insulator) process
technologies in 90 and 65 nanometer."
