Some time ago, I discovered that it was possibe to get the current
configuration for KDE (e.g. a running Korganizer) back on restart.
But I've forgotten how to do it :(

To do this you must boot into runlevel 4 (graphic mode). Then start
the "Control Center" and go to "KDE Components"|"Session Manager" and
here you can choose how KDE should start at login.

If you choose "Restore manually saved session" you will get an
extra "Save Session" option in the KMenu. Then you can setup KDE the
way you want it to start and hit "Save Session" and then KDE will start
this way until you hit the button again.

Runlevel 4 is correct for Slackware, but under my Mandriva system, it is
unused. My graphical runlevel is 5. Just an addition for other people
with the same problem.

For that matter, it it unnecessary to *boot* (or reboot) into your distro's
graphical environment runlevel.

If you want a quick-fix, type
startx
or
startkde
at the command prompt (in console mode, of course). This will start the X
server and your selected desktop environment /for your login only/. When
you hit the GUI's "logoff" button, you return to the non-graphical mode,
still logged in.

OTOH, if you want to put your system into X mode for everyone, you
telinit 4
or
telinit 5
(depending on which run level /your/ system uses for X startup), and stand
back. The system will log you off, run the appropriate programs to set up
graphical mode, and give you the GUI login panel (KDM/GDM/XDM). Of course,
telinit is a priviledged command, so you'll need to be root or sudo to run
it.
