Yes, "New" are those messages you got last time you fetched.

Why not make an extra filter for that? Go to "Settings"|"Configure
KNode" and here choose the "Reading News" section. Go to the "Filters"
pane and click the "New" button and give it a name (24h could be a good
choice) then enter the "Additional" pane and activate "Age". Set the age
to 1 day and choose ">=" and click "OK" and "Apply".
