Unfortunately, quite a few things. First of all, run your antivirus
program (you do
have one, I hope, with the latest downloaded definitions?). Then run
one or more
spyware programs. If you don't have any, be sure to get the free
AdAware and
Spybot. Also download their latest definitions at least once a week.
All these should
be run at the very least weekly.
Secondly, ME is one of the worst operating systems ever devised, and
while
this may or may not be causing the problem, you should seriously think
about
upgrading to XP.
It also sounds as though some programs running in the background may be
causing a conflict. When it freezes, does the cursor change to the
little hour
glass? If so, this may be the proglem.
Fixing this may not be easy, and you probably should get some help from
your friendly neighborhood geek or one at work. You, if you are
willing, run
MSCONFIG and click on the Startup tab and see what is running there.
These
are kind of hard to figure out, but if you see something that you don't
think
should be running, you can uncheck it. Only do one of these at a time,
and
if something stops working properly, go back and check it again.
Another thing you can try is to hold down the CTRL and ALT keys and
then
hitting the DELETE key. You'll see a list of programs running. If one
is highlighted
in blue, and it does not seem to be anything you want, you can delete
it, but be
careful here.
More likely you have some spyware program that shold be eliminated or
else a
virus, trojan horse or a worm.
Worst comes to worst, you may have to take it to a repair shop.
