Hi,
The SUN SPARCstation 5 was a key part of the system, used for booting,
diagnostics etc. It talks to the I/O subsystems over a private
ethernet.
The public face of the J90 talks via a public ethernet and will chat
using telnet, X and other protocols. It was never recommened in service
but many customers used the SPARCstation as a workstation as well as
the system console.
Cheers
Gannett
PS let me know if you need more information about the J90.

I have a friend that has gotten a hold of a used Cray J916. Hopefully
the OS and software is still intact (it hasn't been sanitized). The
console, as I understand it is a SUN SPARCstation 5. I was wondering
for a graphical front end is there a recommend type of workstation
(SUN, SGI or something else)? How does the front end normally
communicate or what are my options (ethernet, fiber)?
Thanks,
Derek
