If you're using x86 type hardware, FreeBSD is probably
you're best choice. It has very good hardware support, an
abundance of software and an excllent linux compatibility
layer as well.
Actually, FreeBSD runs quite nicely on a number of different
architectures. I'm running the amd64 version here myself.
Aside from AMD64 not being significantly different from x86 in
terms of basic architecture (mentioned elsewhere), 2 platforms
does not make a highly portable OS.
FreeBSD, for instance, leaves my sun4m out in the dark, while
OpenBSD makes it a productive (if not high-volume) server once
more.
OTOH, my alpha liked FreeBSD very much. God rest its CPU core.
