I'm still looking at your solution but thank you. Your advice is
exactly what I'm looking for. I"m not sure I understood your
explanation of how the boxes work and I'll need extra time to study
your explanation.

Boxes really require time and ton of experimentation. And I'd personally never propose a code about boxes without testing it beforehand, as I usually do on other subjects.

In any event, I compiled your solution and it does
do exactly what you. The one issue I have with the result is that
numbers outside the grid aren't aligned with the text but I think the
alignment is an issue with pstricks.

Yes, I'd remarked that too. Actually the figures apparently don't add to the box's height, but I really don't know anything about pstricks.

Question: have you read the TeXbook and TeX by Topic? If not, you should
do so immediately!
I borrowed someone's copy of the TeXBook and I've read it once but I
took the author's advice and didn't read any 'dangerous curves' or
'double dangerous curves' parts. I'll have to borrow it again. It's
no an easy read.

You don't borrow the TeXbook, you buy it, or stole it if you prefer, anyway you _own_ it.

As for the book "TeX by Topic", I believe this is an open source text
that I've consulted rarely.

Gasp. I've recently started using Vim. One of the very first commands I've created is `:Texbytopic'.
Using plain TeX without TbT is like... like... no comparison will do.
If you had to choose, I'd recommend TbT over the TeXbook (some think otherwise, though).

Are there specific chapters in the two references that you would
recommend for embedding figures or working with boxes?

In TbT: chapter 5, ``Boxes''. In the TeXbook, I don't know, I've only read it twice.

Best,
Paul
