The advise of using centering might not work correctly because LaTeX by
default does not typeset to a grid. thus you may end up with something
that is not an integral number of lines high.
I usually just use memoirs \fancybreak for my definition of \starbreak
But I don't use a marker that is higher than the text
The other post was related but not the issue at hand; avoiding float
and using vspace* instead of vspace has resolved this issue - for
which thanks.
Since the broader context is now apparent I can say that...
I'm not using centering, and whilst LaTeX might not typeset to a grid
(I know widths and heights of things vary, and I expect there are
internal rounding issues) I had been expecting heights to stack up
correctly on the basis that new lines, new paragraphs etc. should
start at an appropriate offset from where things left off (and even if
LaTeX thinks there is a slight vertical over or underflow shouldn't
the difference get distributed evenly among the lines?).
Alas, despite carefully measuring the height of my graphic and using
precise vspace I find the total space varying by up to 2pts in the
middle of a page, which is very frustrating because the eye notices
such things.
I've just had a look at fancybreak; I could use my graphic with vspace
above/below as the "text", but if it doesn't work as is, why should I
expect it to work in a fancybreak? What other arcane wisdom can you
share?
NB the graphic is created in an old version of Mathematica that does
not allow precise control of the bounding box, and if edited in
Photohsop subsequently, Photoshop rounding errors introduce visual
artefacts on such small symbols) so I'm stuck with imperfectly sized
graphics that I have to pad...
I actually have 3 symbols of different sizes representing different
degrees of narrative separation but I would like them all to fit
(nominally vertically centered but aesthetically adjusted) in a two
line space (and not upset the facing page line alignment)
.
