Figplace with Eplain doublecolumns

I am using figplace to put a copyright notice at the bottom of the front
page of one of my eplain based documents. I want this copyright to appear
in only the first column of the paper, and this so far works just fine.
When I use \doublecolumns and then use \addfigure1 to put the figure
in the bottom of the page, things seem to work the way I want them to,
except for one little issue.
The figure is correctly placed in the left column of the page, but
the right column of the page does not extend down past the copyright
to use up all the left over space in the other column. Instead, it
stops where the left column stops. This isn't very nice. Is there
a way to get this effect? It's similar to the ACM copyright form at
the bottom of their article pages.
