Can anyone point me to BibTeX key naming conventions which you know
are in use, so I can review and choose one or adapt to my own?

My favourite is to build the key from the following 3 parts:

- name of the first author
- publication year
- first page number of the article

Example:

,----
| @ARTICLE{breeden:1967:59,
| AUTHOR = {Breeden, K. H. and Sheppard, A. P.},
| TITLE = {Millimeter and Submillimeter Wave Dielectric Measurements},
| JOURNAL = {Microwave Journal},
| YEAR = {1967},
| PAGES = {59--62},
| MONTH = {November}
| }
`----

Using the first page number automatically resolves ambiguities in the
case of multiple publications in a year by the same author and if you
have a hardcopy of a certain publication then your BibTeX key is
virtually given on the first page.

Thank you Uwe,

While it is not guaranteed to be unique (but I have to admit that the
chance you would have two pubs come out the say year in different
journals with the same page number is *astronomically* small ;-) This
is a great start. I think I will add the following clarifications:

-- unpublished/unknown (applicable to year and page)
-- modifiers for preprints, but for which you know the year it was
written (I do a lot of reading from arXiv.org)

Cool. This works for me.

Thanks again,
