Adjusting font size in LaTeX.

In pdftex I often take a font primitive statement like:
\font\rm bchr8r at 10.05 pt

and adjust the font size by tiny increments to increase or decrease
the page count.

In contemporary LaTeX, what is the least troublesome way of making
such fine adjustments while avoiding use of the \font primitive?
