I want to install avm.sty.  It is on CTAN:http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/LingTrees/CDM/#j...,
so I supposed it should be possible to install it with tlmgr.  However:

# tlmgr list | grep avm
# tlmgr install avm.sty
couldn't find avm.sty

(BTW, there’s a small bug here: the last message does not end with an
\n, which makes the prompt follow it directly.)

Is there a trick to find out which package group contains a certain
file, or how to install specific files from CTAN?  I could of course do
it by hand, but I like to have this automatized.


NO. The distinction is not common/uncommon but included in TL/
not .included. Note: avm.sty is part of lingtrees bundle and the
latter is not part of TL. You can post request about lingtrees to tex-
live@xxxxxxx (TL team is very responsive) but there may be a reason
not to include it (it may be license, request from the author, or in
your case python processor). If they decide to include it will be
automatically installed in some round of tlmger update --all.

But you can always install manually either in /usr/local/texlive/texmf-
local TDS tree or ~/texmf (~/Library/texmf on MacOSX) TDS tree
