Yeah, that's definitely the sort of thing to watch out for.

I think someone once mentioned that nath ignores the limits in it auto scaling feature, which might be the best solution.

Maybe a less intrusive solution would be to roll in the limits-smashing into a \Sum command a la the cool.sty package. But yes, I like this idea; something to add to the list for breqn, I reckon.
