I've published two books by sending pdf files to a publisher
(Booksurge, part of Amazon).
* Paper size and stock size. What are the common way that a publishing
company deal with the paper size and printed size of the page layout,
and how it relates to the stock size? I mean, Is it common to send the
pdf file in standard A4 paper size and they can deal with it? What is
people's experience?
I sent the pages the actual size (6in x 9in). Booksurge give very
precise instructions for the preparation of the pdf files. If your own
publisher can't provide you with help, you should look at Booksurge's
(www.booksurge.com).
* Fonts (text, math and figures) Can we expect some problems about
missing fonts in their system?
Are there any way to guarantee that fonts will be always embedded? We
are using latin modern roman, sans and typewriter set, which I think
that it is quite usual. However, if you would think that other set of
fonts could be safer please let me know. What is people's experience?
You should definitely embed the fonts 100%.
* Regarding coloured figures and images we are worried about the
visual impact of the black and white printed version. Are there any
rules regarding this issue? Can be reasonable to convert all the
figures to black and white to check the result? What is people's
experience?
Colour is much more expensive to print than black and white. You can
print your figures on a black and white printer to see how they look,
but I expect it would be much better to convert them to b/w before
sending them.
