More info. Perhaps you could produce a minimal one-page version
and include that in your follow-up.
Some questions that come to mind:
What program is doing the dvi->pdf conversion?
Where on the page does the spurious 1 appear?
Are you using any package that is special to PDF (e.g., hyperref,
pdfpages, etc.)?
You said "only when using Acrobat 6.0"; does that mean other versions
of Acrobat Reader don't show it?
Have you tried other means of viewing the PDF files (GSview, other
versions of
AcroReader)?
Any unusual messages from latex?
Did you try pdflatex instead of dvi->pdf?
