The above example that I posted works for 'simple mathematical
expressions', so you can use it in the
\hashcol{$m_n$}
sense and have the whole expression $m_n$ printed in a different
colour. However, I do not know how to, for example, extract the
subscript (n in this case) from the expression and colour that
different from the (say) m. If you want to add optional arguments to
the \hashcol definition, you can do so without problem. Read more

However, you are somewhat limited in terms of the optional argument
and what it can do for you. There are more complex constructs that one
can perform.
