Perhaps a bold note in all the FAQ pages and documentation is in order:
THE OUTPUT FORMAT CAN CHANGE BY CHANGING THE PREAMBLE CODE, NOT JUST BY
CHANGING THE COMMAND LINE!! :)
Things that can change the output format from within your document, off
the top of my head:
- starting with a %& format specifier in the first line (e.g. %&pdflatex)
- passing a driver option to hyperref or graphicx (pdftex, dvips, etc.)
Note that a global document option is passed on to packages.
- something that involves \pdfoutput, but I shall not name that here
since it gives people strange ideas about how to find out whether the
output is pdf or dvi and they really should be using ifpdf for that.
Yes, the wikibook was unfortunately wrong about that aspect.
