I don't know of any. I don't think 100% automatic conversion to RTF or

I agree with this statement, and this is answered in FAQ as much as it could be.

However, along these lines, I could not figure out a decent way of generating Word-documents (or openoffice) that could be used with some form of a reference software. Basically, I have my large bibtex database, and when I receive basic word documents that I need to insert references into, I take into LaTeX, do the referencing via BibTeX and re-import to Word etc. However, after couple of iterations this becomes problematic. It would be nice to be able to create a Word document that could still be edited in a reasonable manner. And I do not like importing to Endnote (first of all, I use Linux) and then inserting the refs either, because then all the custom tags I made with BibTex become unusable. I think I am looking for a referencing software for Word that can read in bunch of tags and turn them into references.

Does this make sense?

If you have Word, there's a chance that you also have Access or Excel through which to parse and match your BibTeX records. It'll take some work with VB macros but the infrastructure is all there.

Not under Linux....

Is UPenn on the MSDN system? If so, there might be ways to get someone else to do at least part of this for you, or at least supply extra software that could make the job easier.

Sorry, I confused who wrote which step of the conversation. So your problem is to produce a Word document without using Word or the Office Suite. On that, I can't say anything more than has already been said on converting via rtf and html, neither of which has ever worked very well for me. But that does depend a good deal on what features of LaTeX you do and don't use in the document.
