Lucida under Debian?

Hi,
I've used the Lucida fonts happily under Debian. Now the nice computer
maintenance people have kindly updated my computer, and I can no longer
get them to work.
The package still lies unpacked under ~/texmf, kpsewhich lucida.map
shows the map file, but as I'm working with user privileges only I
cannot seem to find a way to get the map file to appear in 'updmap
--listmaps' except with a preceding #! as in '#! Map lucidabr.map'
which I gather comes from some system-wide configuration file. A
bit of googling seems to indicate that Debian has set up a somewhat
more esoteric updmap system where the actual configuration file is
set up from snippets, so I set up
$ cat .texmf-config/updmap.d/29harrifonts.cfg
Map lucida.map
Map mtpro.map
and when I write
$ updmap --enable Map lucida.map
I get among the output
Enabling map file in /home/haha/.texmf-config/updmap.d/29harrifonts.cfg
Running update-updmap to merge the changed files
update-updmap: unable to determine the configuration directory; you can
specify it with --conf-dir
I have no idea what to try any more. Oh, and I have run mktexlsr every now
and then too. When I try to pdflatex, I then get errors like
Warning: pdflatex (file hlsb8r): Font hlsb8r at 1120 not found
This also with the lucida-sample.tex bundled with the package, so
my tex file should not be at fault.
Can you think of a way, I don't particularly care how ugly, for me
to get the fonts to work again?
Regards,
Harri
