To solve the problem, I uninstalled gs-esp (as well as gs-gpl, gs-
afpl, gs-common), and then reinstalled just gs-gpl. I could not
reinstall gv, because Ubuntu thinks gs-esp is a dependency, and
installs it automatically. Now I'm just doing without gv and evince.
latex, bibtex, dvips, ps2pdf, and acroread all work as they should.
I use Ubuntu too and I have found that I like kdvi, kghostview etc. a lot. You could try those in stead. They are installable under Gnome; the package manager will install the needed KDE libraries.
