I went to the library computer to check the details, as I suspected my
version of Acrobat is not working well.

What happens is that the 8pt italic font won't display as anything
other
than illegible dashes on the paper (default fontsize is 10pt). Also the
last-but-one page of the PDF, the one that had all the French on it, is
just
blank; a panel says that it can't be read.

Could you please slowly explain what the problem is? Start at the
beginning, don't omit details, give exact error messages etc.

As I understand it:
1. you used TeX (or LaTeX or ...) to produce a .pdf file. What exactly
did you do? Were there any error messages?

I worked through all my error messages, wanrnings and anything similar in
this group, and eventually got a document that compiled with no errors.
Or
at least it said 0 Errors, 0 Warnings and 0 Bad boxes at the bottom of
the
window where it runs through the compilation; strangely just above it
there
is a line saying something about 3 error messages - which, if I am
identifying the right ones, began "I found no citation commands when
reading...[the file name and directory of the TeX file].

What is "this group"? The bottom of what window? To check for error
messages you look in the .log file associated to you .tex file.

2. You open the .pdf file with Acrobat (in "the library"?) and it
looks funny "on the paper". What paper? Did you print it? Does this
happen on all Acrobat readers or only in the library?

No, the *saved* PDF looks absolutely fine. It's just when it's on the web
that the problem occurs. The 8pt italics shows as vertical dashes, a bit
like apostraphes, but not.

I can't give much more details as to the errors today because when I try
to
access the page from my system it just says 'operation not allowed'.

Well, it looks like your webserver has problems. Does not seem like a
tex problem.

The Fasthosts Help Team say,

<<This is not an issue with our servers, I have tried downloading the file
on several different machines and all the machines have shown the file the
same way - there were some errors popping up within Adobe Reader, indicating
there is a larger issue with the file or the way it is constructed itself -
these same errors were shown when accessing the file directly through our
servers.

I appreciate that you may feel this answer unsuitable, however at this point
there is really nothing more that can be done - the webserver appears to be
serving the pages and files exactly as they are uploaded into the server
itself, thus doing its job sufficiently.

I would recommend checking the settings when uploading the file and/or
uploading it through a different FTP client to see if you get the same
result, however I cannot find an issue our end that would resolve the
issue.>>

I'll try a different FTP client, but how that could make any difference I
couldn't guess.

Well, it might be that the file gets corrupted on transfer, but that
seems doubtful (why would it display at all?) In some other post you
suggested that there still might be errors in your .tex file that are
hidden from you by your editor contraption (the name of which you are
still hidding from us). Check the log file ( file.log, if your tex
file is file.tex) and if there are errors in there tell us about it.

In case there are no errors I would strongly suggest making a minimal
example of a file producing the funny .pdf effects.

You are are really providing very little information.
