Yes, I know I can just make a sans-serif C and a small # -- but I was

A little closer to what? I see various looks to C# on that page.
Indeed. And if I increase the text size in firefox, the # takes on a
considerably increased slant in some of them. They all seem to be just
C (in the current font) followed by # (in the same or a compatible
font), sometimes raised, sometimes not. I assume the one in the
(graphic) banner is desired.
Maybe something with \valign would look more as you wish.
This was discussed on c.t.t more than once. Some of those threads
must be googlable.
