The method of acessing these glyphs discussed in this thread is
implemented via the ligature feature in TFM files. Similar to the *two*
characters `` giving a *single* english opening quotation mark, or the
*two* dashes -- giving a *single* endash. Of course, this feature is
also used for the real ligatures like 'fi'.
