Well, thats easy, isn't it: web-pages to be looked at in a browser end
in .htm or .html, if it ends in .pdf its a document to be looked at with
Adobe Acrobat (which can actually be used as a browser plugin, although
I'd not recommend that).
The file names. The link text and appearance can be anything,
unfortunately. (Hey, there must be a market for a browser that actually
shows links differently that need a plugin/external app to use. Surely,
given Nielsen Group's usability findings.)
By the way: pdf is not an active format and can be downloaded without
fear of viruses and worms (one of the reasons why it is so common now).
Oh, really? People said that about windows media format. Now they're
notorious vectors of spyware, as well as individual popups/unwanted web
browser hijacking to direct it to an advertiser's page.
Adobe has been putting DRM-type features into PDF of late, the way
Microsoft did with Windows Media. How long until this creates the
capability for a PDF file to hijack a browser, install spyware, or
otherwise compromise your system? Anyone want to lay odds on whether
it's *already* possible and there just aren't any known exploits in the
wild yet? And, of course, we don't hear anything about how secure
against buffer overruns or similar vulnerabilities PDF software might
be. After the recent exposure of a WMF (windows metafile) exploit, and
given that Adobe is basically a mini-Microsoft in its behavior and
attitudes towards consumers, I wouldn't be willing to bet my computer's
security on Acrobat Reader being exploit-free. Would you?
