Most of us who write a lot of mathematics find a WYSIWYG front end like
SWP absolutely indispensible (you see the mathematics as mathematics
when you are writing/editing, not as TeX code).
Indispensible? No. I know hardly anybody in my field (theoretical
physics) using SWP. I personally like using preview-latex, though, which
gives me both: full control over the source code and excellent previews
where I want them.
