of using a command in environment form, as above. Perhaps
"\begin{bfseries}", if memory serves.

Correct, example 7.3.1.

However there is one important difference, namely that \begin{bfseries} \end{bfseries} will work as you expect but \begin{small} \end{small} needs help in form of \par.
