tex/latex install for unix and win?

I have a nework appliance accessible from Win and HPux platforms.
I'll be compiling the teTeX binaries and installing them for the HPux
platform there. My question is whether I can also install ProTeXt there and
have them both access the same texmf tree.

The tree I'm thinking of:
system/bin/hppa2.0-hp-hpux10.20/(hp binaries)
system/texmf/(complete tex packages/styles)
system/texmf/miktex/bin/(miktex specific binaries)

The sweet thing here would be that I could use the MikTeX Update Wizard to
update new packages for access from both platforms.

Has anyone had experience trying to get this to work?
thanks,
