I would test the hypothesis by doing \hbox{K}\hbox{EY}\vrule\hbox{N}.
If the character looks like before and \vrule ends up at the left side
of the K, then that proves that kerning information is not at work.

This showed the K on one line, the EY on the next line and further to
the right and the vrule and N on the next line even further to the right.

I meant to do this within a paragraph, where \hboxes are placed
side-by-side. You apparently did it in vertical mode and the boxes are
stacked one atop the others.. Also, the \vrule will then start a
paragraph and add the \parindent (which explains why N is so far
right.

Then I tried \hbox{K}\vrule\hbox{EY}\hbox{N} and got K on one line
and, on the next line and to the right, a vrule immediately followed by
a composite character consisting of the EY and the N, with the N below
and the EY in the upper right.

Now the K preceeds the paragraph started bt \vrule and you have EY and
N side-by-side. The fact that this looks like a composite proves that
the box widths (equal to the character widths) are what causes the
arrangement you asked about

You should start paragraph mode first, or use \mbox if this
is LaTeX (I've forgotten), which will start a paragraph if used
outside one:
\leavevmode\hbox{K}\hbox{EY}\vrule\hbox{N}
or if LaTeX:
\mbox{K}\mbox{EY}\vrule\mbox{N}

That pretty much settles all the questions I had. Thanks a lot!

I'm not sure what you did was the right way to settle your questions.
