Until I decided I wanted to show the mouse cursor. I got a screenshot
of a mouse cursor, cropped it down, and saved it as a PNG with an
appropriate transparent color. Viewing the PNG standalone in Firefox
works great, the transparent part doesn't show up.
However, when I pull it all together as above, the background isn't
invisible anymore.
This doesn't surprise me. Do PostScript and/or PDF support
transparency?
Any suggestions on how to get picture or pdflatex to honor the
transparent png?
I think a better way of doing it would be to compose your image
completely before including it in your document. One way to do it
would be to use layers in GIMP and combine them, then to save the image
in whatever format you like. You might have to adjust the settings
that determine the resolution of your image, since GIMP's defaults
might not be suitable for printing. You could also use ImageMagick.
