True type (.ttf) and type1 (pfb) are two different font formats.

It should work fine.

Normally ghostscript shouldn't embed a font. It's dvips that should
embed it in the ps.

No. tfm files don't contain fontdescriptions, only metrics.

There exist ttf-Versions of the (OT1-encoded)-cm-fonts
ftp://ftp.dante.de/tex-archive/fonts/cm/ps-type1/bakoma/ttf/
I don't know if they would help you as I didn't have understand what
fonts you really use (minimal example?), and what trouble illustrator
has.

99%: yes. bitmap can be a better choice if you want to prepare a pdf
for a special printer.
