Re: MinionPro README, suggested changes

Aloha Michael,

Sorry to have been so confusing. When I originally tried to install
MinionPro I was unable to determine the version number of the fonts
because the otfinfo I downloaded from Gierben Wierda didn't support the
-v option. I read the MinionPro README file and saw the statement that
the version currently for sale was 001.001 and because I purchased mine
recently (instead of taking them from a distribution with which they
had been bundled) assumed that mine were that version. The
installation "worked" but when I set some type with MinionPro I noticed
that characters sometimes collided and in other places there were loose
spacings. Even without a discerning eye it was clear that *something*
was wrong. I suspected my assumption about the version was incorrect,
so I read around to find other software that would help me discover the
version number, found pfaedit, discovered the version was 002.000,
changed the installation, reset the same source document and was happy
to find that the characters were set right, not too tight or too loose.

Adobe's web site has for sale a Minion Pro with 8 fonts and a Minion
Pro Opticals with 32 fonts. Originally I purchased just 2 fonts from
their Minion Pro Opticals, regular and italic, so I could experiment.
These were both version 002.000. In my last post, in response to your
query about whether Adobe was mixing different versions, I was
wondering whether the fonts in the Adobe distribution of Minion Pro
might be a different version from the fonts in their distribution of
Minion Pro Opticals. This would explain the discrepancy between the
statement in the README file that the version currently for sale is
001.001 and my experience, which yielded version 002.000.

I've done some further investigation on the 32 fonts in the Minion Pro
Opticals distribution. As you requested, here is a complete list of
the otf files:

MinionPro-Bold.otf MinionPro-MediumIt.otf
MinionPro-BoldCapt.otf MinionPro-MediumItCapt.otf
MinionPro-BoldDisp.otf MinionPro-MediumItDisp.otf
MinionPro-BoldIt.otf MinionPro-MediumItSubh.otf
MinionPro-BoldItCapt.otf MinionPro-MediumSubh.otf
MinionPro-BoldItDisp.otf MinionPro-Regular.otf
MinionPro-BoldItSubh.otf MinionPro-Semibold.otf
MinionPro-BoldSubh.otf MinionPro-SemiboldCapt.otf
MinionPro-Capt.otf MinionPro-SemiboldDisp.otf
MinionPro-Disp.otf MinionPro-SemiboldIt.otf
MinionPro-It.otf MinionPro-SemiboldItCapt.otf
MinionPro-ItCapt.otf MinionPro-SemiboldItDisp.otf
MinionPro-ItDisp.otf MinionPro-SemiboldItSubh.otf
MinionPro-ItSubh.otf MinionPro-SemiboldSubh.otf
MinionPro-Medium.otf MinionPro-Subh.otf
MinionPro-MediumCapt.otf Put your OTF files here
MinionPro-MediumDisp.otf

I checked each one of these with pfaedit. They are all version
002.000. The most recent copyright on all of them is 2005, but there
are various earlier copyrights, with one common difference that some of
the fonts were copyrighted in 2004 and others were not. I didn't keep
track of which was which.

Now that I have installed the 32 fonts, I discovered that base-v2.zip
contains files for a few of them. Initially, this confused me because
I had read in the README that the file had everything I would need.
Now I see that base-v2.zip covers the fonts that were supplied with
recent Acrobat Reader installations: MinionPro-Bold.otf,
MinionPro-BoldIT.otf, MinionPro-IT.otf, and MinionPro-Regular.otf,
which pfaedit tells me are also version 002.000.

You can see that I am new to the intricacies of LaTeX fonts. I never
managed to make it through those long font discussions in the LaTeX
Companion.

I do appreciate your good work on the MinionPro package and your
response to my confused queries. I have one more (hopefully not
confused): do you plan to augment base-v2.zip with the information for
the other version 002.000 fonts now that these are the ones currently
for sale?

Tom
