Re: TeX installation in MS Active Directory Environment

Hi all,

does anybody have some experience installing TeX in a Microsoft Active Directory Environment? After my workstation was put onto Active Directory and I requested the installation of TeX, the Admins were not particularly happy. The (slightly biased) response I got was:

What we CANNOT support is a product that...

* is a hacked about cobbled together string of non integrating
packages, that has to be individually tailored to each installation.

* Cannot be rolled up into an installation MSI for use with Active
Directory.

* does not understand the difference between normal users and system
administrators. And expects users to be administrators. Power users is
fine but NOT admin!!

* expects the user to have to configure virtually every setting in order
to use it. Or does not allow each user to maintain their individual
settings in their own 'My Documents' area.

* does not know how to properly install within the Microsoft XP
environment. Or additionally requires some manual intervention in order
too get it to work properly.

Personally, I don't know anything about a TeX installation on MS Active Directory because I've never done it. But now as I'm forced to use it, maybe somebody here in the Newsgroup can give me some tips about TeX & Active Directory which I can forward to our admins? In particular, which distribution is likely to be the most suitable one?

Thanks for any response,
Michael

Typical response from a technician who claims to know all about security but runs Windows... Nice. Oh, it cannot be rolled up into some Microsoft format. Good. Keep it that way.

Configure every setting? I remember when I had installed MiKTeX on my work laptop (which now runs GNU/Linux... phew!), it ran straight out of the box, and I didn't have to do any configuration at all.

These technicians seem overly in favour of Microsoft. I bet they feel all special because they have some Microsoft qualification on their CV. It will probably be useless in about 10 years.

Anyway, IIRC, there is a MiKTeX distro that runs straight from the CD. That could be what you are after. Also, run Linux.

Cheers,
    DG.
