After much difficulty I have discovered the problem which I outline below
for the record.

On the adobe support page http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/330984.html
there is the suggestion "Solution 12: Remove Microsoft Works". Like many
new PCs mine came pre-installed with Microsoft Works, so I attempted this
fix. Unfortunately all it did was mean that I could no longer use
Autoroute! The original problem persisted.

However, I later noted that in "Add or Remove Programs" as well as
"Microsoft Works" there was an additional item "Microsoft Works add-in for
Word". It was this latter item that caused the problems. I still have
Works installed, but not the add-in, and the Acrobat menus now appear
correctly in Word.
