"Mike" <michael_biasetti@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> spake the secret code
<zlwaj.36$e56.14@xxxxxxxxxxxx> thusly:

One thing of note, HyperAccess has modem lights on a toolbar. Both the SD
(Send data) and RD(receive data) lights blink when I enter commands, so I
believe there is a valid connection. There is a CD light, which we believe
to be Carrier Detected (or maybe collision?) which is always on with only
one configuratin of the cable. When the CD light is on, I get strange
characters echoed back when I continue to hit the same key, whereas when the
CD light is off and the cable is configured the other way, I get what I type
echoed back. It's quite odd.

This sounds like you're talking at the wrong baud rate when you get
back the noise and you're just echoing locally when you had the cable
in the other configuration. CD is carrier detect and I believe indicates
that the connection is functioning in this case.

Now, with all this information, and a few hours worth of testing different
configs, is it safe to say that this box is dead?

Nope :-) Before you give up go back to the connection that echoes
funny characters when you type and change the baud rate of your
connection on the PC to different values. Start at 115200 bps and
work your way down to say 300 bps. See if any of the baud rates give
you more meaningful echo back.

When RS-232 is talking at different baud rates, it looks like "noise".
