Single Quotes in gcc

Greetings,

gcc 4.02 on suse 10 will not display the single quote character
correclty even when i change the encoding to UTF-8.

Originally it displayed single quotes as an 'a' with a '^' carot on
top. After reading the FAQ and changing the encoding to UTF-8 I get a
lower case 'a' and a lower case 'e' smushed together. The closing quite
is an upper case 'A' with an upper case 'E' smushed together.

Anyone know anything I can do to get the single quotes to display
correclty?

Putty 0.58, Windows XP Pro
