Xerox Docuprint 4512N - one problem and two questions

Hi to all the owners of the in-depth knowledge regarding the abysses of
Xerox-printers,
about 2 weeks ago i asked the following questions in
de.comp.hardware.drucker already but there was no response yet so it may be
a little bit too specific for a group covering all printer types and
manufacturers (or am I the last user of Xerox Docuprint 4512N?). Please
excuse literal mistakes in this translation for I am not a native english
speaker.
Preliminary - the Environment:
- peer to peer network with Win2k pro and win XP driven stations
- Fritz.Box SL as Router/DHCP-server/DNS-server (thoug IP's didn't change
ever yet)
- Edimax 5-port switch 10/100 MB autosensing
- Xerox Docuprint 4512N with fixed IP address in the same subnet but outside
DHCP-range of Fritz.Box SL
- connected as a local printer via standard TCP/IP port
- Netware- and Appletalk protocolls deactivated
- PCL 5e Emulation (no other available)
The problem:
Automatic duplexing produces poor quality on all odd pages.
A vertical zone of about 4 cm width covering the complete heighth of the
document, starting 6 cm right of the left *** border is printed blotchy
and in light grays instead of black. All even pages are printed without
these failure. If I do duplexing manually or print in simplex mode, all
pages of the same documents print fine.
The questions (just because I am curious - not related to any problems):
1. Why has "LPR byte count" to be enabled in the interface configuration?
Deactivating this often (why not always?) causes incomlete printed pages
with ascii-debris preliminary to the next print job. In Google I found
several topics containing advice to enable/disable LPR byte count for
preventing printing problems but I couldn't figure out any rule under what
circumstances it has to be configured in this or in that way. Is it
printer-language-specific, hardware-specific, application-specific or what
else?
2. How can I suppress the automatic printing of a network status page each
time the printer is powered on?
For the Xerox-XNIC interface i'm told that a network status page is printed
with each power-on when the printer is not connected to a network. My
network interface is NOT the XNIC, but the standard interface used in every
4512N. The printer is switched on when a print job is to be done because of
the enormous 30 to 50 watts power consumption in energy saving mode. Network
is active at any time I switch on the printer and PINGing/TELNETing to the
device works from any station. My switch indicates correctly an established
10Base-T connection immediately after I switch on the printer.
Unfortunately I've only got a russian (kyrillic) version the service manual
(not user manual!), so I can't identify any "secret" printer menu options to
toggle this function on and off. User manuals (printer & NIC) don't give
advice.
Please sprinkle a little bit of your wisdom and spirit over me an enlighten
my simle mind.
Frank
