The MA800 was a late-1980s MCP-based system. It consisted of a standard
(for the time) PC with a few add-on ISA boards that supplied the MCP
processor (the original SCAMP chip) and memory, one or more SCSI
interfaces, and a datacom (i.e., poll-select) processor. Some models had
cards that could support 10bT networking, including TCP/IP, but this was
not common. The Intel side of the box ran an early version (1.0? 1.1?)
of OS/2. The last version of the MCP that was supported on this system
was (I think) SSR 43.1. The current version of the MCP is 52.1. The
MA800 was not a ClearPath MCP system, and supports none of the ClearPath
enhancements.
The approximate value of this system today, other than as a historical
artifact, is zero. If it still works, I would suggest donating it to a
computer museum. Make sure you give them all the system tapes and/or
CD-ROMs that came with it.
This was a really nice system (in its time) for development or light
production. I used one for years, and still have it, although it hasn't
had power for more than five years. It blazed a trail in terms of server
capability and price/performance that unfortunately Unisys/Burroughs
failed to pursue.
