As a rule of thumb, yes. Of course there are files and programs which
demand more careful analysis, but I find them to be rare. Most files are
fairly small, and for large files the disk system optimizations that you
detailed take care of most of the difference.

Thanks for all the details on modern optimization. Yes, I was talking about
older disks (think 215/225/235) in mentioning losing revolutions under
certain conditions. I figured I was underestimating the disk transfer
speed, but a higher speed would just make the point stronger, and it was
already strong enough.

And of course we haven't even talked about RAID, EMC "clouds", etc.
