Hello Harry,
you can check with Inglenet about migrating DMS/2200 and RDMS to a
relational database. There is a complete set of migration tools and
services. Migrating the database is however just a part of what is
required. The tools include COBOL batch and TIP/HVTIP online
applications, DPS screen formats and ECL job control. So the entire
application can be migrated to a new target platform, usually Unix/
Linux.
As Steve mentioned, RDMS on the 2200 is not really an option, as it
will still leave you on the original platform. The target rdbms is
usually Oracle, the COBOL compiler is Micro Focus.
The application will be completely intact, so developers will find it
very easy to maintain and enhance the application on the target
platform.
We have provided a proof of concept to a european 2200 site just last
month by migrating a small number of batch and online programs, DPS
screen formats, ECL streams and his entire DMS/2200 database to an AIX
platform running Oracle and Micro Focus Server Express. The client was
able to change the programs, screen formats and database structures,
use source level debugging and just feel very comfortabel maintaining
the application on the new platform after a 2 days workshop. This does
not mean, that this is sufficient, but they felt very comfortable as
all the DMS, TIP, DPS API's where just the same. They had Unix and
Oracle in house already, so this is why they got up to speed very
quick.
We are representing Inglenet here in Europe, guess you are in the US,
is that correct?
Hope this can help.

1100/2200 Techies,
I have been tasked with investigating the benefits and pitfalls of migrating
from a hierarchical DMS2200 database to a relational database. Targets
should include RDMS2200, Oracle and SQLServer. I need things such as best
practices, success stories, processes, available tools and effort
requirements.
All you 2200 techies out there, where can you direct me to help me research
this?
