I have a Model 4 that wouldn't completely load LS-DOS or TRSDOS. On
the advice of someone, I opened it up to reseat the chips. U1 wasn't
seated very well at all so I took it out and reinstalled it and did
the same with the rest. I also did the same with ribbons and other
connectors, doing my very best not to harm anything. I then rechecked
all connections to make sure it was right.
Now, it starts in Model III BASIC. It will first check driver 1 then
ask for a cassette.

What can I do to fix my computer?

Thanks,

Bil

It's possible the floppy drive board is bad. If the floppy
drive board is present, it should be necessary to hold
down the Break key to get into Mod III Basic. If it used to
try to boot from floppy before you took it apart but it
doesn't now, you may have not reinstalled the floppy
board properly or hooked up the cables to it correctly.
I'd check those things first.

Sorry I'm not contributing anything- I have the same problem.
If I let the computer try to load a disk it hums for a while then has
lot's of @@@@'s across the screen.
Do you know what that means?

Try booting into basic (holding down break while it boots) PRINT MEM will tell you if your memory is ok (48082... test only the ram available to model III mode so not all for that you need to boot a model 4 dos or super tool). It would also be possible to check the disk interface if it is alive (it would be nice if someone made a complete description of such a test).

As you describe it it seems a bit like when I have problems with the cable between the EI and the model-I so maybe you have a problem with the cable between the model 4 mainboard and the floppy interface :-(

Then again, are you sure the boot floppy is ok? Do you have several and the same thing happens? some other dos? model III dos?
