FWIW, I had success with an old printer which used plain paper rolls. The
only rolls I could find were either too narrow or too wide. A too wide
roll and a fine bladed hacksaw plus a little care and patience sorted that
problem ;-)

The dimensions of the central tube might be relevant too. I was lucky.
