Oh, Microsoft are crap, their excruciating attempt to sterilize everything

There's been a pretty successful push for music on linux over the last
few years, go to the jack applications page for a starter;
http://jackaudio.org/applications
There's some good stuff there, ardour is a very good digital mixing
and editing package, midi packages abound, and link to each other
through the jack subsystem. Freewheeling was good too, intended for
live performances. Pd is a graphical real-time sound designer in
which you build sounds by drawing sound modules such as filters,
frequency generators, switches, mixers etc. I've had a look around
previously and was pleasantly surprised by the amount that there is
now.
There's a lot more too but I was only interested in the ones that
linked to each other through Jack so you can cable one packages midi
codes into another, then another's audio outputs into the inputs on a
third after going through a reverb package and so on.
You don't get any paperclips popping up asking you if you want to
write a tune though, it's more for those who know what they're after
in the first place.
As for games, run xmame or buy a games console, games are for games
consoles, computers are for serious play ;-)
