Re: Copying C68 on to QL floppies

Hi,

Having recently aquired a QL I'm attempting to copy the C68 compiler
environment on to a 1.44Mb floppy. I've found QLTools and used that to
format the disk, however I can't figure out how to get the C68 files
from the zip archive on to the floppy. Unzipping the archives in
Windows XP doesn't work as many of the files are not created (they seem
to have names that are invalid under XP).

Is there a way to unzip the files directly on to a QL format floppy? Or
is there a another way to bypass the "unzip under Windows" step?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

vrai.

If you are willing to wait a couple of days there's a ongoing discussion on ql-users right now on a similar subject (ie preparing disks on the PC for use on the QL).

As for C68 archives:
The filenames that cannot be decompressed are actually useless. These are 0 byte filenames used as "index tabs" in the directory of a disk ie.

---Executables----
as68
cc
---Documentation---
cc_doc

etc. So you can safely skip these.
However you will have trouble actually running the executables as unzipping on XP you will lose the headers of the files (and the programs won't be executable under the QL filing system)
You have to get ql-unzip <www dot daria dot co dot uk>
Use the basic program on the page to make it self extracting on the QL side
If you have 1.44 Mb drives on the QL I assume you are using either a Goldor a Super Gold Card.

Your best bet would be to download the sources for SMSQ/e, compile it (requires a hard disk) -or we can send you an unofficial copy (long story but I can explain on private mail what unofficial means... it is NOT illegal however-) which can read PC format disk (slowly but it can). SMSQ/e is a replacement QL Operating System. At this time it is your best solution to move files between QL and PC without too much hassle.

Another solution (where c68 is concerned) is to look for XTC68NT - a C68 version for NT class OSes (XP included)-, update it with the most recent libraries and do the work on a PC. THere is a trivial amount of work involved to make the executables run on the QL side afterwards but on the upside you can use many of the IDEs found on the PC as a front end
