I think Brian has summarized the microdrives well
If the cartridge is not in its drive it should be in its protective case. On the rare occasion a loop of tape is exposed, tap it back into the cartridge with a pencil - never your finger.
Always allow the drive unit (I have ten) to accept the final part of the cartridge - never force it.
There were early improvements to the Interface1 ROM (reliable predictive format), drives (smoother acceleration instead of stop-go) and cartridges (improved thinner video tape giving 92K formats instead of typically 86K ).
However as Brian said, a crash, with random OUT instructions, would wipe the cartridge in Drive 1. Since OUT was a BASIC command many magazines published these commands to change the BORDER colour.
I used to write to them pointing out that this would also erase all data on the first cartridge but my letters were never published.
I think it is time to name and shame.
Have you a magazine with a border colour tip that would also trash your microdrive data.
(Test it in your emulator not the real thing.)
Brian Gaff <Briang1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> writes
Like any media, mdvs are only reliable if you look after them, keep them in
even temperatures, etc. They were designed fairly fault tolerant... they had
to be, the construction of the drive was crap!
I think the biggest problem I had with mdvs was the Spectrum crash that
erased the drive just completely. No amount of write protection could save
it.
