Hmmm, bells ringing...
Would the CD happen to be plugged into a soundblaster?
Because I started out with one of those, and it needed dos to be booted to
set up the soundcard properly before the cd would work.
(Note, this was over 5 years ago...)

Nah, scan rates don't normally lock the system, that's usually the result of
a disagreement between the device driver in X and the graphics card.
What is it? (the graphics chipset that is?)

Bet you have to use a driver CD provided by the manufacturers though, don't
