Until I got the job that involved it, and then broadband, it was for me.
I bought 3 full editions of SuSE over the years before I got access to the
disks to copy or download for myself.
Now? No, there's no need. The value added stuff in the box sets like support
and dead tree manuals don't hold any value to me anymore. I've probably done
more complicated support issues than the suse support covers anymore.
So, I will download it. If at some point I lose broadband, I'll buy it
again. Ahh, the freedom of choice.

No it isn't.
It's how the WORST side of it works.
There's such a word as philanthropism, I suggest you look it up.

Money is a device by which tokens can be exchanged for products and
services. Nothing in the definition of money says that ALL products and
services must be paid for however.
