mine charges via USB, but much more slowly than on the PSU connection
you dont see any indication of the charging when it is going on via the
power indicator.
FWIW i think that there may be some cables / USB setups that dont provide
the power, but i havent seen that in practice.

Re: UPS shutdown procedure ... Originally I connected by USB cable but started running out of USB ports so changed to serial port connection.... On further investigation I can see that the system 'should' shutdown the PC normally when the battery power kicks in. ... But you are right, perhaps it is border line current draw causing the usb to drop connection, reconnect and drop connection again. ...
